Fire on Oceanside Pier creates massive smoke plume

And there’s something like — I don’t know if it’s quite a contradiction of terms, but there’s a collision of different values at stake. So universities thrive on the ability of students to follow their minds and their voices where they go, to maybe even experiment a little bit and find those things. And so as Isabella and her colleagues at the college newspaper see it, there’s this overall chilling effect that occurs.

Rich Crab

It was the first time that he has been shown alive since his captivity began. His kidnapping was the subject of a “Daily” episode in October that featured his mother, Rachel. In response to Hamas’s video, Rachel issued a video of her own, in which she spoke directly to her son. There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe. What it seemed to evoke was the message that Hamas should murder those Jewish students. That’s the way the Jewish students interpreted it.

Try to reserve an outside table and marvel at the vistas. After enjoying the skyline views, stop into a Häagen-Dazs®️ Shop and try their latest creation, the New York Strawberry Cheesecake Dazzler. Indulge in the new flavor at Häagen-Dazs®️, like this one at The Grove. There’s no end to the weekend lines at Broad Street Oyster Company, a good sign of both the quality of the food being served and the business model itself. This pandemic-era pop-up turned Malibu fixture is perhaps LA’s best home for lobster rolls and so much more.

New York City

They consider the city and the world, really, like a classroom to Columbia. Beach House lives up to its name by placing guests right on the sugary white sands of Bradenton Beach, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, on the southern end of Anna Maria Island just south of Tampa Bay. While Beach House offers indoor dining as well as an inside bar, the place to be is on the covered patio area, where you'll find a bar overlooking the public beach.

Following our USA TODAY Network Florida Dining & Entertainment story about our favorite waterfront restaurants, we turn our attention to the Sunshine State's best beach bars. Our menu features 28 days of wet-aged USDA Prime steaks cooked in a 1,500-degree broiler served sizzling hot with clarified butter on plates heated to 450 degrees. At Mastro's we have an array of the freshest seafood selections, like our 2-foot-tall seafood tower of chilled crab legs, shrimp and oysters served over a cloud of dry-ice. Bespoke cocktails are dramatically presented in a haze of dry-ice, the list of world-class wine is extensive, and of course, Mastro’s has a premium selection of beer available.

And it turned out to be a disaster for these universities. So the House Education Committee has been watching all these protests on campus. And the Republican Chairwoman decides, I’m going to open an investigation, look at how these administrations are handling it, because it doesn’t look good from where I sit. And the House last winter invites the leaders of several of these elite schools, Harvard, Penn, MIT, and Columbia, to come and testify in Washington on Capitol Hill before Congress.

These are the best Mother’s Day gifts you can buy …

So the encampment is met with very little resistance at the beginning. There were public safety officers floating around and watching. But at the very beginning hours, I think there was a sense of, we did it. Having the encampment happen on the Wednesday morning of the hearing was an incredible, in some senses, interesting strategy to direct eyes to different places. And so in my time of being a reporter, of being an editor, I’ve overseen several protests.

Plan ahead and pre-order, or settle in for a meal directly across from Malibu Lagoon State Beach. El Muelle 8 is the very definition of an LA story. Oh Manna Fish Market serves up stellar deep-fried seafood in a former Wienerschnitzel (complete with the classic A-frame building). Nearly everyone orders the catfish and hush puppies, which should always be eaten immediately to savor the batter’s hot, crisp crunch. Head to this Vietnamese seafood specialist for the signature baked catfish. Sáu Can Tho Vietnamese Kitchen’s whole crispy-skinned fish is served with herbs, lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber spears, vermicelli rice noodles, and rice papers.

At 4 o'clock, a third vessel had joined the fight as well as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, but smoke continued to pour out all sides of the two-story building as well as beneath the pier, with only a few flames actually visible. Over at the coast, people had started to congregate to watch the conflagration, with some posing for selfies with the historic structure aflame behind them. Enjoy live entertainment at the bar seven nights a week while sipping on hand-crafted cocktails and eclectic wines. Mastro's is committed to delivering an unforgettable experience, every time. At the southern tip of LA County is Long Beach’s Ballast Point.

Thursday at the end of the historic pier, a major tourist attraction in Southern California. Flames ripped through a now-vacant restaurant building that formerly housed a Ruby’s Diner, sending a large plume of black smoke billowing overhead. As of 10 p.m., crews were still battling active fire on the restaurant building and the pier and boats were still in the water, according to Blake Dorse, a division chief with the Oceanside Fire Department.

And for those students who maybe couldn’t go back to — into campus, now all of their peers, who were supporters or are in solidarity, are — in some sense, it’s further emboldened. They’re now not just sitting on the lawns for a pro-Palestinian cause, but also for the students, who have endured quite a lot. The encampment is set up in the middle of the night slash morning, prior to the hearing. And so what effectively happens is they caught Shafik when she wasn’t on campus, when a lot of senior administration had their resources dedicated to supporting Shafik in DC.

Eliminate the encampment and send a message, this is not going to be tolerated. But in trying to quell the unrest, Shafik actually feeds it. She ends up leaving student protesters and the faculty who support them feeling betrayed and pushes a campus that was already on edge into a full blown crisis. I’m taking steps in good faith to make sure that we restore order to this campus, while allowing people to express themselves freely as well.

I think there was obviously a lot of intention in timing those two things. I think it’s inherently a critique on a political pressure and this congressional pressure that we saw build up against, of course, Claudine Gay at Harvard and Magill at UPenn. And it’s a university on top of all that that has a real history of activism dating back to the 1960s. So when students are recruited or choose to come to Columbia, they’re actively opting into a campus that prides itself on being an activist community.

For decades, the Mondrian has continued to attract visitors to its iconic Sunset Strip location. It’s got glitz and glam in droves, especially now that the Tulum-inspired Casa Madera has taken over the rooftop. The menu ranges for every type of diner, with chicken al pastor taco platters alongside a 44-ounce bone-in Wagyu tomahawk for $295. HiHo’s Marina del Rey location overlooks the water with casual indoor seating, along with burgers and a fried chicken sandwich collaboration with Willie Mae’s Scotch House from New Orleans. Always order the house made pies, and parking is available in the boardwalk lot.

There is only one great view of the San Fernando Valley, and it’s at Castaway. In 2017, the longtime restaurant underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and is now the place to bring family, a date, or anyone else without leaving the Valley. It might not be on a literal rooftop, but this location might as well be the ‘rooftop’ of the Valley.

This is “The Daily.” Today, the story of how Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators, and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech. I’m a producer with “The Daily.” Just walked out of the 116 Street Station. It’s the main station for Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus. And it’s day seven of the Gaza solidarity encampment, where a hundred students were arrested last Thursday. A couple dozen tables are sprinkled around a large concrete-paver deck. Scoring a coveted spot on Southern Living’s best beach bar list, Collier County’s sole honors went to Kane at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort.

And there was no clearer embodiment of that than what had happened that morning just as President Shafik was going to testify before Congress. Well, they remain under investigation by the committee. But also, as the winter wears on, all the same intense protests just continue unabated. So in many ways, Columbia’s like these other campuses. This is a university that has both one of the largest Jewish student populations of any of its peers. But it also has a large Arab and Muslim student population, a big Middle Eastern studies program.

Santa Monica’s outdoor rooftop restaurant Elephante is a beach-adjacent gem. Heat lamps are strategically placed to warm diners from the cool ocean air. Though the cactus garden room is gorgeous, the sunset room has ocean-viewable seats. The menu reads Italian but leans Californian with a gem salad and spinach alongside the wood-fired burrata pizza, fusilli pasta, and grilled octopus. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Experience stunning settings and vibrant energy complemented by truly genuine hospitality.

With over 60 miles of coastline, LA’s beaches start north near Point Dume and Malibu, all go the way to Long Beach towards the south. Along the way, iconic beaches such as Venice, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and Long Beach host stunning sandy shores, whether sunny or overcast. From the Korean specialties at Redondo Beach Crab House to the casual burgers at HiHo in Marina Del Rey, here now are 15 breezy beachside restaurants to check out in Los Angeles this summer. You have faculty, including professors, who are not necessarily sympathetic to the protesters’ view of the war, who are really outraged about what Shafik has done here. They feel that she’s crossed a boundary that hasn’t been crossed on Columbia’s campus in a really long time. But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions.

Parson said crews would remain on scene into the night, looking for "hidden fire" or hot spots, to prevent the blaze from rekindling. By 6 p.m., SkyRanger 7 showed a very different scene than when it arrived hours earlier. Smoke still blew at the scene, but was no longer billowing, with the plume was vastly diminished. Small flames could be scene burning here and there, but the fire, in the structure at least, seemed to be largely knocked down. The firefighting boats and Coast Guard cutter remained on station, water cannons still blasting.

If you’re looking for a no-frills beach bar and restaurant with spectacular sunset and beach views, this Bonita Beach landmark is for you. While Hurricane Ian raged through the first floor of this family-friendly beachfront favorite of locals and visitors,  the upstairs was completely untouched. As soon as it reopened 14 months later, we were seated at a corner table in that bustling second-floor sports-themed bar area, enjoying ice-cold beer, signature Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches and a clear view of the beach.

Ocean House, a sprawling seaside resort brimming with historic East Coast charm. This storied property has a lot to offer—a private beach, a world-class spa and an extensive art collection. However, what really stands out this season are the on-site cuisine, wine and mixology. A team of wine and culinary professionals welcomes guests to experience a unique selection of intimate epicurean events, tastings and immersive educational opportunities that invite active participation in the farm-to-table process. Luxuriously cozy private dining that transports guests to the French Alps, with delightful in-gondola afternoon crêpe or dinner service. And on Wednesday, Hamas released a video of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American dual citizen, whom Hamas has held hostage since October 7.

Isabella says that this was just the beginning of a really tense period between student protesters and the University. After those two student groups were suspended, campus protests continued. They asked that the University divest from businesses that profit from Israel’s military operations in Gaza. But instead of making any progress, the protests are met with further crackdown by the University. Yes, it certainly came as a surprise, especially at “Spectator.” We’re nerds of the University in the sense that we are familiar with faculty and University governance. But even to us, we had no idea where this policy was coming from.

Not only is the atmosphere immaculate, but the food is a destination of its own with three separate dining areas with different styles and price points. When a bar's name makes it into a Jimmy Buffett song, you know it has to be pretty iconic. In his song "Bama Breeze," Buffett articulates the memories that took place in the "world famous" beach bar that straddles the Florida-Alabama state line. Tallahassee residents are just 80 miles away from a beachy paradise. You can walk up to the breezy Blue Parrot from the beach, rinse your feet off on the boardwalk and order a margarita from the deck with a front-row view of the Gulf.

This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. State Farm offers home insurance in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. State Farm has been consistently near the industry average for home insurance complaints, though higher than top competitors. Westfield has consistently had a low complaint ratio to state departments of insurance compared to the industry average over the past three years.

How do I get homeowners insurance in California?

Bankrate is aware that most homeowners would appreciate an estimate of how much they can expect to spend on a policy first. In the United States, the average cost of homeowners insurance is $2,151 per year for $300,000 in dwelling coverage. This can help you gauge what other Americans budget for their home insurance, but your rate is likely to be different. Chubb also offers extended replacement cost coverage for your dwelling and replacement value for your belongings as part of its standard policy — another unusual benefit for consumers. This means that if your home costs more than expected to rebuild after a covered disaster, Chubb will pay more than your selected dwelling limit to help cover the cost.

You might not get the same coverage limits or deductible options with every company, but try to match them as closely as you can to ensure you’re not sacrificing coverage for a lower premium. Your home insurance policy may have special deductibles for damage from hurricanes, windstorms or other events. These deductibles are often a percentage of your dwelling coverage and may be significantly higher than your main deductible. Read your policy carefully to ensure you understand when these deductibles may apply. Unlike auto insurance requirements for vehicle owners, the state of California does not impose minimum insurance requirements on homeowners.

Personal liability insurance pays legal costs if someone sues you for an issue covered by your liability insurance. This can include medical bills and lost wages if a person is injured at your home, and other problems for which you’re responsible, such as a lawsuit against you over a dog bite. Replacement cost coverage reimburses you for the cost of buying new, similar items, rather than the depreciated value of what was destroyed. Replacement cost coverage will cost you more but you’ll get a higher payout if you have a personal property claim. The higher the limits you choose for your house, the higher the potential payout by the home insurance company.

Your home insurance personal property coverage will either cover your items at actual cash value (ACV) or replacement cost value (RCV), depending on what your insurer offers. In the event of a covered loss, ACV pays out the current value of your items after taking depreciation and your deductible into account. RCV, on the other hand, pays out what it would cost to replace the item with a new version today, minus the deductible.

Nationally, more than half of U.S. homes are underinsured.1

Review your coverage details to ensure your policy will cover the cost of rebuilding and repairing your home in case of fire damage. There’s a significant risk of natural disasters like earthquakes and wildfires in California, making it important to have sufficient coverage to protect against these disasters. Home insurance deductibles apply to your structure and personal property coverages, not liability insurance coverage. The liability insurance within a homeowners policy pays for injuries and property damage you accidentally cause others.

It has a wealth of coverage options for valuable items, like special endorsements for jewelry, art, collectibles and even wine and spirits. Bear lives in the Big Blue House with his friends Ojo, Tutter, Treelo, Pip, Pop, and Shadow within the woods outside of the community of Woodland Valley. Those normally include solving problems, sharing, cooperating with each other, and developing social skills.

Most of the segments are in song, while some are simply a short story relating to the episode's theme. At the end of the program, Bear sings the goodbye song with Luna, the moon. Bear – The lovable and huggable star of the show, Bear was performed by actor Noel MacNeal. With his warm and friendly personality, Bear quickly became a favorite among children and adults alike. MacNeal brought the character to life with his incredible puppeteering skills and voice acting.

Several of these characters appeared in a music video for the We Are Family Foundation. Bear also appeared as a celebrity in the 1998 revival of The Hollywood Squares; he notably appeared in Whoopi Goldberg's final episode. Bear in the Big Blue House is aimed at teaching lessons to preschool and early school-age children. In each episode, Bear explores learning concepts such as feelings, the alphabet, nature, science and more with the kids of the Big Blue House and/or out in Woodland Valley.

Soho House, NeueHouse, Aster, Heimat: The new era of L A. clubs Los Angeles Times

soho house

After a two-year price freeze during the COVID-19 pandemic, Soho House raised its “Every House” annual membership to $4,000 in February, a double-digit percentage increase to help it manage inflation. (Members younger than 27 — about a fifth of its base — get half off all three membership categories, a common practice among social clubs looking to cultivate a more youthful vibe.) Annual retention has nonetheless held steady at about 95%, the company said. The 1960s theme continues into the sitting room on the ground floor with vibrant mint terrazzo floors, dark wood paneling, and a selection of neutral and patterned fabrics throughout this space and its chic outdoor extension, the Atrium, located in the courtyard.

From downtown to Malibu: A guide to Soho House in LA

A membership committee, composed of club members, decides who is and isn’t granted access to each specific club. (So, it’s entirely subjective.) Kim Kardashian and the Real Housewives are in the same category as lawyers and hedge fund managers, as former membership director Tim Geary told the Hollywood Reporter — both lacking in the je ne sais quoi that deems one worthy of Soho House. In a fifth-anniversary oral history of LA’s Soho House, the Hollywood Reporter called it “the most important club in Hollywood — a high-wattage magnet for A-listers and dealmakers.” Here, not just any industry member is given star treatment or even allowed into the club.

Eater main menu

The city is a match made in heaven for Soho House, known for its avant-garde interiors, bold color schemes and on-point material choices. The Soho House portfolio now includes more than a dozen different restaurants, many with multiple locations in cities with a Soho House club. Like the clubs, these restaurants are deliberately branded in carefully chosen, often transportive spaces. The barriers to entry, though, are much lower, and in addition to being free to enter, most restaurants have relatively affordable menus.

A New York Times article notes that the artists who once worked from the space are not the membership base the club is courting. Instead, the new Soho House seems to be banking on professionals in creative-adjacent industries, such as chefs, tech workers, business owners, and as Jackson-Glidden noted, Nike employees. “We’re trying to reach a crowd that’s creative in their souls and like-minded,” Andrew Carnie, Soho House’s chief executive, said.

Little Beach House Malibu

Somehow, the "wrong crowd" managed to infiltrate New York’s Soho House — a crowd of corporate suits. Soho Warehouse is the future Downtown LA outpost of the members-only club Soho House, which has locations worldwide, including those in West Hollywood and Malibu. Originally planned to open in 2016, the current projection is that the renovated warehouse will open sometime this year.

This house is IMPRESSIVE, with its amazing interior design, 20 floors and 360 views of Los Angeles. This location has has many members, amazing food options, lounge/meeting areas and event space. He only does this with a few restaurants and chefs in the world, so consider this location lucky. But don’t try to take a photo of anything, because Soho House Weho and a no camera policy.

“We’re not suggesting that an exclusive membership can’t coexist with humility. “In order to deliver a certain level of service and a certain level of experience, and to create a tight-knit group, there is a function of scale and numbers that you do need to be mindful of. Founding members of Water (377 people) will pay $15,000 to join, and founding members of Earth (2,878 people) will pay $7,500.

And finally, the rooftop is where you can relax on one of the daybeds, soak up the warm Los Angeles sun, and take in the stunning views with a cocktail in hand. The space also features a commissioned abstract mural by Jessalyn Brooks and chic, fringed umbrellas lining the pool. Here’s how it got started, and everything else you should know about the most famous exclusive club there is. And the Soho House brand comprises more than its famously members-only clubs. Soho House owns restaurants all over the world (restaurants that anyone can go to), has a burgeoning e-commerce operation, and, over the past 25-plus years, has established its presence as a global hospitality brand. Established as a social club in 1895, the Jonathan Club spent a lot of time combating its long and stuffy history.

It underwent a hip makeover in 2013 and relaxed its dress code in the hope of attracting a younger crowd. (Since 1987, it also allows non-white-male members.) Henry E. Huntington, the railroad magnate, was a member. After a lull in 2020, when many private clubs temporarily or permanently shut down and plans to launch new ones were postponed, club owners are pushing ahead to take advantage of remote-work policies and pent-up demand to hang out and spend money doing it. Now there’s an influx of newcomers rolling out in the trendiest corners of town, with grand openings every few weeks. None of that has deterred the droves of hopefuls vying for spots in the new class of members-only clubs. Nor, so far, has a slumping stock market and an economy flirting with recession.

Club amenities will include private restaurants, bars, and lounges; a supper club; a pool; screening rooms; a fitness center and spa; and 15 guest rooms for members of the club. Few cities are cooler, edgier or more creative than Los Angeles, and nowhere embodies this spirit more than West Hollywood. It is no coincidence, then, that Soho House, the private members’ club favored by media and entertainment types, has opened a second house here.

Located in the arts district of Downtown LA, Soho Warehouse began as an industrial building and recording studio. This location is the only one in LA that houses a roof-top swimming pool. Other amenities include a sitting room for connecting and working, the Mandolin Taverna restaurant and bar, and drawing room for events and workshops. The artsy environment and curated space allows for people to admire views and work with inspiration.
